ABA President Laurel Bellows encourages women who want a better job, a higher salary and increased benefits to put modesty aside at the bargaining table. An experienced business lawyer and negotiator, Bellows routinely counsels senior executives and corporations on compensation matters, including benefit plans, pensions and retirement.
Bellows’ tips were developed as resources to recognize Equal Pay Day on April 9. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that overall, women earn 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. Experts suggest that women would make great strides in closing the gender wage page if they improved their negotiation skills.
